Tamassee is a small unincorporated community located in the northwest corner of South Carolina in Oconee County. It has a population of approximately 1,100 people and covers an area of 4 square miles. Tamassee is located near the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known for its natural beauty.
The community was established in the early 1800s and has a rich history. Tamassee was once home to the Tamassee DAR School, which was founded in 1919 as a boarding school for girls from poor and disadvantaged families. The school operated for over 90 years before it closed in 2010 due to financial difficulties.
Today, Tamassee is a quiet and peaceful community with a few small businesses, including a post office, convenience store, and a few restaurants. The area is popular for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and boating, as it is surrounded by numerous lakes and the nearby Sumter National Forest.
